Na Hong-jin’s Hope has arrived in North America with the kind of release that would have seemed almost unthinkable for a Korean-language creature thriller only a few years ago. Distributed by Neon, the ambitious sci-fi horror epic opened September 9 in 1,560 US and Canadian theaters—the widest North American release for a Korean film since Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite—and has now reached $7.29 million domestically. Its worldwide total stands at approximately $44.34 million, with more than $37 million coming from international territories outside North America. Box Office Mojo
Those figures require a little perspective. Against the commercial expectations attached to a conventional Hollywood horror release, a $7.3 million domestic total would not be described as a breakout. Studio horror is built around a different equation: recognizable English-language casts, intense domestic marketing campaigns, wide theatrical saturation and, frequently, lower production costs that allow even modest openings to become profitable quickly. Hope, however, is not operating as a routine American horror title. It is a Korean-language, 156-minute genre film with a deliberately strange tonal identity, entering a marketplace where subtitled releases still face barriers of habit, accessibility and audience perception.
What makes the performance meaningful is not simply the number itself, but the breadth of the experiment. Neon did not quietly platform the film in New York and Los Angeles, wait for reviews and hope that word of mouth might build over several weeks. The company gave Hope a substantial national footprint from the outset. The film opened with $1.1 million on its first Wednesday, then generated a $3.23 million opening frame across its first full weekend. By its first Sunday, it had accumulated just under $4.93 million. Box Office Mojo For a filmmaker whose work has long commanded admiration among horror devotees but has not previously been given this level of North American theatrical access, that is an important commercial and cultural step.
